Preliminary Task

This is my preliminary task which is the front cover and contents page of a college magazine that I made on publisher. I used images which I took from around the college.

This is my front cover for my preliminary task. I like the use of the bubble because it breaks up the magazine.
I havent included a skyline in this magazine but I will include one in the final magazine.

This is my contents page, it follows all major conventions. I like having the contents all on the left hand side however the magazine looks very symmetrical but I feel it looks slightly boring, so when I do my final magazine I will mix images with text to make the contents page more visually appealing.
I have used a constant colour scheme throughout the task which I will also do in my main task.
I have over used capital letters which I did for emphasis but it is too much so I will change that when I do my final magazine. also i will change the font because i dont like it.

Sample Masthead

These are screenshots of my sample masthead for the front cover of my final magazine using Photoshop.

I can't decide which side too put the 'rewind symbol' on. I have used a font with italics.

Main Task Flat Plans

this is a flat plan of how my main task will look, it is the front cover of my magazine, it will follow major conventions. The base line and the bubble are optional but i have added them to the front cover as i feel this will attract more buyers.

this is my contents page and this also follows major conventions. i have made the the contents page very symmetrical and i have done it this was because i feel this increases visual appearance of the page.

the is my double page spread and i have again followed major conventions, the strap line explains the pull quote which is used to encourage readers or buyers.

Flat Plans

This is a flat plan for the preliminary task, I will use orange white as my colour scheme because they both contrast well together. All of the writing will be white and they will be surrounded with orange boxes which will contrast with the main image well.

Front Cover Deconstructions

I have created sa powerpoint with three different magazine covers which i have deconstructed and analysed. I have uploaded the powerpoint via slideshare.

Key Features of a Magazine Cover

I found this image by searching on Google images for Bazaar Magazines. I have added the features around the image.

Masthead:
The Masthead is the title of the magazine and can normally be found in the top left corner of the magazine. The masthead also identifies the magazine.

Main Sell Line:
The main sell line is the Title of the magazine and explains what the magazine is about.

Coverlines:
The coverlines give a brief description of the main points discussed within the magazine. These help to increase impulse buys.

Main Image:
The main images shows what the focus of the magazine is for that issue.

Additional Information:
Additional information, for example would be the issue number, price and date. These are all small so that they dont take up much room on the page.

Sub-Headings:
Sub headings also give an idea as to what is in the magazine, they also inecourage impulse buyers much liek coverlines.

Barcode:
The above image doesnt have a barcode, however they are commonly found on the magazine. They are used to scan an item within the shop.

Foundation Portfolio Print Brief

Preliminary exercise: using DTP and an image manipulation program, produce the front page of a new school/college magazine, featuring a photograph of a student in medium close-up plus some appropriately laid-out text and a masthead. Additionally you must produce a mock-up of the layout of the contents page to demonstrate your grasp of DTP.

Main task: the front page, contents and double page spread of a new music magazine (if done as a group task, each member of the group must produce an individual edition of the magazine, following the same house style).
